Engine Governor | Types | Working

Hello friends, welcome to all of you in another new post, today we will know what is engine governor. How many types are there and how do they work? So let’s know about the engine governor, what is the governor and how does it work?

Engine Governor

what is an engine governor?

In simple words, the engine governor is such a mechanical device. Which is used in the engine. And its main function is. To maintain speed even when the vehicle is under load. So, due to the load, the speed of the vehicle is affected. So to control that change governor is used in an automobile engine

How does the government control the speed?

Whenever there is a load on the engine, then in that situation the fuel supply in the engine is less. In that case, the governor increases the supply of fuel. Due to this the supply to the engine increases. And the car moves forward at normal speed. On the contrary, when the load in the vehicle is less. So the speed of the vehicle increases to some extent. So in that case also the governor controls the fuel supply. And the car moves in a normal way. So now you must have come to know that the change in the speed of the vehicle. So the government controls it.

what are the types of engine governor

Engine governors are of the following types –

Centrifugal Governor –

Centrifugal wall weights or flyweights are used in this. And these weights are mounted on the camshaft of the fuel injection pump. These weights are applied by a spring. Usually, when the engine is running, the camshaft of the fuel injection pump rotates these weights accordingly. Whose relation is also with the control rod of the pump?

modus operandi

Whenever the wall weights rotate, they also start spreading outwards due to centrifugal force. when the engine is running at a low speed. So the weights also rotate faster and spread out more. That’s why the control rod related to them also moves outwards more or less according to the spread of weight. And in the fuel injection pump, the control rod controls the maximum and minimum speed of the engine by increasing or decreasing the quantity of diesel in the diesel supply by rotating the plunger through the control sleeve. In other words, it can be said. The governor regulates the amount of diesel in the diesel supply as per the requirement of the engine.

Watt Governor –

It was discovered by James Watt salt scientist and he named it after him, hence it is known as Watt Governor. This governor is a simple type of centrifugal speed controller. And it is called Lok speed governor. This is the form of the centrifugal governor. These are generally of three types –

simple watt governor
offset arm watt governor
cross arm watt governor

Pneumatic Governor –

A diaphragm is used in these. which is the basis of this system. This is influenced by the depression created in the inlet manifold during the suction stroke. It has units. Diaphragm unit and inlet manifold unit. A butterfly is fitted in the inlet manifold. Which is connected to the accelerator pedal.

modus operandi

A venturi is fitted in the inlet manifold. And it is related to the diaphragm unit. when the engine runs. So there is a sucking effect at the time of suction stroke in the inlet manifold. This creates a vacuum in the venturi. Which exerts its effect on the diaphragm. This diaphragm is fitted with a spring. It is also related to the control rod. For this reason when the butterfly is opened by the accelerator pedal. So accordingly the diaphragm is

pulled outwards against the pressure of the spring by the suction generated from the vacuum. This also pulls the control rod connected to the diaphragm. By turning the control sleeve to the right, the amount of diesel in the diesel supply is increased by the plunger. Similarly when the accelerator is pressed less. So suction has less effect on the diaphragm. Due to this the control rod also reduces the amount of diesel supply by pulling it less.

Porter Governor –

Porter Governor is an improved form of Watt Governor. In this, a fixed load is placed on the sleeve. A fixed load can move up and down on the axis of the spindle. Due to the downward action of this fixed weight, the speed of rotation of those centers increases. due to which they can rise only up to a certain height

hydraulic governor

In this, hydraulic pressure is used on the control rod at the time of supply to control the speed of the engine. There are four main parts to this governor. Control Plunger, Hydraulic Pump, Plunger Spring, Narrow Mouth

When the engine is running, the hydraulic pump runs according to its speed. And he puts the pressure of the oil in the same ratio on the control plunger. Control plunger which is engaged with a spring. Also connected to the control rod of the fuel pump. So when the oil pressure is on the control plunger So the position of the control rod changes. This also makes a difference in the amount of fuel in the fuel supply. Due to this, the supply of diesel to the engine is controlled at maximum and minimum speeds.

Profile Governor –

In this governor, point E of flying balls is attached to their upper end by connecting them. In this speed governor porter speed governor a load of flying balls is kept less as compared to the porter speed governor for the same speed

Hartnell Governor –

It is a type of spring-loaded speed controller. two bays in it

two bel end is mounted on the crank lever. A frame attached to the spindle of the speed controller rotates along with the spindle. Flying balls are attached to the ends of the vertical arm with levers and rollers attached to the ends of the horizontal arm. A downward force acts on the roller by means of a compressed coil spring. The compression force on the spring can be regulated by tightening the nut on the top of the speed governor.
